Cable Probes

Cable probes are compact RTD or thermocouple temperature sensors supplied with a permanently attached, flexible cable and a probe sheath in direct contact with the process medium. Configurations range from simple plug‑in designs to versions with standard process connections such as compression fittings and threaded connections, plus specialty mounts like weld-on pads or bayonet locks for equipment integration.

The defining advantage is mechanical flexibility. A small sensing tip and bendable lead allow measurement points to be placed where rigid stem assemblies or bulky connection heads are impractical, including tight clearances, moving assemblies, or locations that require routing around obstructions. Material, insulation, and strain-relief options support both rugged industrial service and compact equipment builds, while keeping installation effort low.

Because the sensor is often installed with minimal wetted mass and without an intermediate thermowell, cable probes can deliver fast response for dynamic temperature control and protective monitoring. They also simplify stocking and replacement: a standardized probe form factor can be paired with the preferred termination, extension cable, or transmitter strategy (head-mounted, field-mounted, or cabinet) to match signal, diagnostics, and environmental requirements.

Selection typically centers on sensing element (Pt100/1000 RTD versus TC type), sheath material compatibility, cable jacket rating, ingress protection at the termination, and the mounting method needed to maintain immersion and sealing integrity. Where erosion, corrosion, or high-velocity flow is expected, direct-contact construction should be evaluated carefully and a thermowell-based assembly may be more appropriate. In high-vibration or high-cycle duty, attention to bend radius, secure clamping, and mechanical decoupling at the mounting point helps sustain long-term stability.

Typical uses include machinery and skids, HVAC systems, storage temperature monitoring, laboratory equipment and autoclaves, bearing temperature measurement, and services that span cryogenic to elevated temperatures and pressure. The same form factor is also employed where a bent probe is required for difficult installation conditions or where surface monitoring of vessels and reactors is needed without complex mechanical assemblies.
