Chlorine Sensors & Transmitters

Chlorine and disinfection monitoring instruments pair dedicated sensors with transmitters that condition, compensate, and communicate the measurement to control systems. The instrument range typically covers free chlorine, total chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and free bromine, allowing plants to match the measurement to their disinfectant strategy and regulatory basis.

The primary benefit is continuous residual control. Instead of adjusting chemical feed from periodic bench tests, operators can close the loop on real-time residual - reducing the risk of under‑disinfection while avoiding over‑dosing that drives taste/odor concerns, corrosion potential, and unnecessary chemical cost. Continuous plausibility checks and sensor/process diagnostics further improve operational confidence when residuals are used for compliance decisions.

For designers, the measurement loop should be treated as a system: sensor selection for the chemistry and expected range, proper flow/pressure conditions, and the compensation strategy implemented in the transmitter (for example, pH compensation approaches used with certain free chlorine measurements). Transmitter families range from straightforward single-channel devices to multiparameter platforms that consolidate disinfection and related water-quality signals.

Common applications include drinking water and reuse disinfection monitoring, filter effluent control, distribution-system booster stations, and industrial process water where biocontrol is required. In wastewater, chlorine residual measurement also supports downstream dechlorination control where residual limits are tight.

Specifying these instruments early helps avoid retrofits: provide sampling points with stable hydraulics, allow for sensor access and calibration, and integrate measurement status into operations workflows. When the disinfection loop is designed for maintainability and traceable calibration, the resulting residual record is more defensible during audits and investigations.
