Extended Sludge Level Sensors and Transmitters
Sludge level sensors and transmitters are purpose-built for sedimentation and clarification tanks, where knowing the location of the sludge blanket and separation/transition zones is essential to stable solids handling. These instruments continuously track the process zones during clarification and settling, providing a real-time signal for control of sludge withdrawal.
The operational payoff is straightforward: pump sludge, not water. By continuously monitoring the separation and transition zones, plants reduce unnecessary pumping and improve process efficiency while preventing solids carryover that degrades downstream treatment. Continuous sludge blanket data also improves response to hydraulic surges and load changes that are difficult to manage with manual spot checks.
In wastewater treatment plants, typical installations are at primary and secondary clarifiers, where the measurement supports clarifier control and sludge handling decisions. Stable blanket control improves final effluent performance and increases confidence in clarifier capacity during variable influent conditions.
For designers, key considerations include tank geometry, mounting approach, and the expected solids profile. Measurement loops should be placed to reflect the control objective - early detection of blanket rise, improved withdrawal timing, or better settling phase visibility - while ensuring service access and protection from mechanical damage.
When integrated into SCADA with trends and alarms, sludge level becomes a diagnostic tool as well as a control input. Persistent blanket rise can indicate settling performance issues or upstream process stress, enabling earlier intervention and more predictable clarifier operation.
