Extended Nutrient Analyzers & Sensors
Nutrient analyzers and sensors provide continuous or near-continuous measurement of key nitrogen and phosphorus species - commonly ammonium and nitrate, and in many cases phosphate-related parameters - using a mix of colorimetric analyzers, optical sensors, and ion-selective electrodes. They move nutrient monitoring from periodic lab reporting into actionable control signals.
The benefit for wastewater and water-quality programs is twofold: regulatory assurance and operational control. At outlets, nutrient measurement supports compliance and can reduce discharge fees by demonstrating performance against limits. Within treatment, real-time nutrient signals support optimization of aeration control and precipitant dosing during biological treatment.
Designers and operators should treat nutrient measurement as a complete sampling/measurement system. Analyzer installations may require sample conditioning, reagent logistics, and cleaning strategies; in-situ sensors reduce sample handling but still require thoughtful placement and maintenance access. Technology selection depends on the parameter, desired response time, and the site’s tolerance for fouling and maintenance.
Typical applications include monitoring wastewater plant outlets, optimizing aeration based on ammonium/nitrate feedback, monitoring denitrification performance, and supporting safe drinking water, mineral water, and process water production where nutrient levels must be controlled. In industrial facilities, nutrient monitoring can also support pretreatment strategies prior to discharge.
When nutrient data is integrated into SCADA and historian systems, teams can correlate process adjustments to compliance outcomes and cost drivers. That visibility enables iterative optimization - tightening setpoints, validating upgrades, and documenting improvements with high-quality time-series evidence.
