TOC, COD & SAC Analyzers

TOC, COD, and SAC analyzers measure “sum parameters” that describe the organic load of a water stream: total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and spectral absorption coefficient. These measurements are widely used because they provide a practical, quantitative view of organic contamination without requiring identification of every compound present.

The benefit is actionable monitoring for both compliance and process protection. Measuring at the outlet of municipal or industrial wastewater streams supports regulatory requirements and demonstrates treatment performance. Measuring at the inlet provides early warning of load peaks, supporting proactive operational responses before a slug load causes upsets or breakthrough.

Instrument choice and deployment depend on the matrix and objective. Higher-strength or more variable streams require robust design and a maintenance plan aligned with loading and fouling; lower-level applications prioritize sensitivity and long-term stability. In all cases, representative sampling and trusted diagnostics are critical so the analyzer remains credible during process upsets.

Typical applications include influent monitoring to protect biological systems, effluent monitoring to confirm compliance, and surface-water monitoring where organic load drives downstream treatment strategy. In industrial facilities, TOC/COD/SAC trends also support pretreatment optimization and verification of source-control initiatives.

From a systems-engineering standpoint, treat sum-parameter analyzers as part of a broader control and reporting architecture: define alarm thresholds, integrate data into historians, and establish verification routines. When those elements are in place, TOC/COD/SAC becomes a reliable indicator for operational decision-making and continuous improvement.
