Automatic water samplers collect representative samples without relying on an operator being present at the “right” moment. Stationary and portable units can be programmed for time‑based or flow‑proportional composite collection, and can be extended with analytical sensors to initiate sampling when a defined event occurs - such as a sudden rise in load.

The engineering benefit is defensible data. Automated sampling reduces human variability and captures transient conditions that grab sampling routinely misses, which matters when compliance, surcharge investigations, or process-optimization studies depend on sample integrity. Integrated sample cooling/preservation concepts and secure housings support chain‑of‑custody and sample quality in harsh outdoor or collection‑system environments.

In collection systems, event-triggered sampling is particularly valuable because it provides evidence of peak loads and helps characterize intermittent discharges. When installed upstream of a wastewater facility, early detection can support operational responses (including upstream diversion strategies) before a slug load reaches the headworks and stresses biological treatment.

In treatment plants and industrial sites, typical applications include influent/effluent monitoring, industrial pretreatment and discharge permitting, stormwater and surface-water monitoring, and investigative sampling during upsets. Portable samplers are often used for short-term studies and troubleshooting across multiple locations, while fixed stations support routine monitoring programs.

For system designers, key considerations are suction lift and line routing, bottle configuration, preservation requirements, and how the sampler integrates with flow measurement and SCADA. Selecting the right triggering strategy - time, flow, or sensor/event - ensures the sample set matches the question you are trying to answer, not just the schedule.
