High Temperature Thermometers

High temperature thermometers are purpose-built sensor assemblies engineered for extreme process temperatures where conventional RTDs and standard stem protection are not viable. These applications occur in services such as steel treatment, glass melting, flue gas, and brick/ceramics processing, where temperatures can reach into the high hundreds to thousands of degrees Celsius and material stability becomes the primary design constraint.

Construction typically centers on thermocouples and robust protection systems. Modular configurations may use base-metal thermocouples (e.g., J, K, N) for broad industrial ranges or noble-metal thermocouples (e.g., B, S, R) for the highest temperature regimes, selected to balance drift, oxidation resistance, and required accuracy. Protection tubes and thermowells made from special alloys or ceramic materials provide survivability against radiant heat, corrosive gases, and thermal shock. Process connections are commonly implemented as threaded, compression-fitted, or flanged designs to suit refractory-lined nozzles, duct penetrations, and standardized plant piping interfaces.

A modular approach is beneficial because it allows each element - sensor type, protection tube, insertion length, extension, and head/housing - to be configured to match the furnace, duct, or reactor geometry. Optional temperature transmitters can be integrated at the measuring point or mounted remotely to protect electronics from heat and vibration while still delivering a standardized output to the control system.

Design attention often focuses on error sources that dominate at high temperature: thermocouple drift over time, cold junction effects, gradients along the protection tube, and mechanical stresses from cycling. Selection of sheath materials, ceramic grade, and sealing details supports stable operation, while calibration and replacement planning ensure that long-term measurement uncertainty remains compatible with product quality and safety requirements.

Typical installations include kilns and furnaces, reformers and crackers, incinerators, combustion chambers, flue and exhaust stacks, and high-temperature process heaters. They are also used in glass forehearths, heat treatment lines, and ceramics firing where reliable temperature measurement is essential for energy efficiency, equipment protection, and maintaining controlled thermal profiles.
